The American Revolution- A Brief Retrospect

7/4/11

Ever year, we celebrate our nation becoming Independent. BBQ’s. Fireworks. Parades. Sparklers. Flags. What began as 13 colonies, has grown into 50 states and several territories. Wars have been fought, here and there. Depressions, Recessions, and sky-rocketing sales. Evolving value preferences have altered debates. Change.

We always imagine the American Revolution having ended a long time ago. But we haven’t actually stopped revolving. Bad ideas have been revolted from. Good ideas are revamped. Or vice-versa. Issues and ideas come and go like the tide. Inflamed, then relaxed.

We are not the same America as we once were. And we won’t be the same America in the future. We can look back and question what the Founding Fathers would have done in today’s world, but what would be the point? We may share the American identity, but we have morphed into completely different skins. We have defended the original rights and liberties that were originally granted to us. And we have obtained new ones. We have revised our opinions.

The revolution will continue to revolve. I cannot comment on where we will be in 200 or so years. I can’t give them any advice. And I am not commenting on where we are today. Some believe we are headed for disaster. Others, like myself, remain optimistic. Because times change. America changes. High tides and low tides. If we move WITH America and do our best to help steer her through her inevitable revolutions, we will continue to be able to celebrate July 4th with smiles on our faces.

Happy Independence Day!
